Celebrity Nutritionist Nmami Agarwal explains that excessive consumption of coffee is related to certain health ailments like insomnia, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate and can even lead to anxiety. Consumption of more than 3-4 cups of coffee every day can create problems in your stomach and also lead to digestive issues like bloating, gas, stomach-ache, burning sensation and heartburn. Various studies said that a high dose of caffeine could cause loose stools and dehydration, which can cause diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting.
Moderate consumption of coffee is considered suitable for the health, but excessive consumption of caffeine can do more harm than any good.
Stomach Upset Possible Due To Coffee?
Nutritionist Nmami Agarwal adds, “Coffee contains caffeine, which is a natural stimulant that keeps you awake and alert. It is found in studies that caffeinated coffee stimulates the colon 23% more than decaf coffee. Coffee stimulates the lower gut and may increase the production of stomach acid, which could be a reason to upset your stomach.”
Other additives that may upset your stomach include coffee acids, sweeteners, cream. People sensitive to lactose or having lactose intolerance can get an upset stomach or bloating due to additives like cream. Coffee acids like chlorogenic acid and hydroxytryptamine have shown to intensify the stomach’s acid production, which contributes to an upset stomach. Since coffee is not purely an alkaline drink, it can aggravate acid reflux. So yes, coffee has chances of making your stomach upset, especially if you have a sensitive gut.
Decaf or Regular For You?
Decaf coffee is short for decaffeinated coffee. It is made from coffee beans that have had their caffeine stripped away. Nutritionist Nmami Agarwal says that It is not entirely caffeine-free but contains very few traces of caffeine. An average cup of coffee contains 70-40 mg of caffeine, while decaf coffee contains 0-7 mg of caffeine. It has a mild taste, less bitterness and is lighter in texture. Those who are sensitive to caffeine can switch to decaf coffee to limit their caffeine intake. Some medical conditions require to be on a caffeine-free diet. Decaf coffee can come quite handy then.
Decaf Has Less Caffeine
Decaf coffee contains a significantly low amount of caffeine in comparison to regular coffee. Too much consumption of coffee can disrupt the body’s functioning. Decaf coffee has a mild taste and fragrance. If you are hooked to coffee and drink it quite often through the day, decaf is a better choice. People suffering from acidity or are sensitive to caffeine can also switch to decaf coffee. Pregnant, lactating women should avoid caffeine and sip on a cup of decaf coffee instead. Nutritionist Nmami Agarwal concludes that excessive caffeine can cause sleeping problems, restlessness, and anxiety. Decaf coffee is a better choice for people suffering from anxiety, hypertension, and insomnia.
